The
Land Lubbers Challenge
(Seasons Required)
The general idea of this challenge is to have a
single Sim live off the land entirely. There are two main options in the base
rules, depending upon whether you like long or short challenges:
1) Have one single Sim live off the land for the space of one Sim year (4
seasons)
2) Have one single Sim live off the land for their entire adult and elder life
stages, until they move on to that Great Garden in the Sky with ol’ Grimmy.
There must be absolutely no jobs taken, no telephone purchased for their
lot, no fire or burglar alarms, no greenhouse, and no shelter (i.e., house with
a roof). “Fake” shelter has been provided for on the lot, but it’s just for
looks.
Lots have been built with differing scenarios in mind so that you can pick your
fancy or do them all. Please note that you will have to set your neighborhood's
seasons to correspond with the lot maker’s challenge scenario.
The basic Land Lubber’s Lot needs the neighborhoods seasons to run Spring,
Summer, Fall, Winter. (Variation: if you want a bigger challenge, start in the
summer for a shorter growing season.)
Only one Sim allowed on the lot. Make a Sim in CAS. They can be male,
female, rough and rugged or glitzy and glam, and whatever aspiration you want,
but either way, they're on their own. (Variation: if you want a bigger
challenge, roll for aspiration and/or personality point scores and go with
whatever you get. Could be interesting.)
Set your seasons and install the lot, then move your Sim onto in. They must
survive on their wits and skills (or lack of either!) for an entire year without
sun burning, freezing, or otherwise perishing.
Your Sim cannot eat any regular meals from the fridge. They have to eat things
you catch or harvest - even if they're boots! This means that all multi-serving
meals must be thrown away and not kept in the fridge as leftovers. If your Sim
autonomously makes a meal, cancel the action and throw it away. Thus, the Sim
must survive on grilled fish and juice from the juicer. They will have to stock
enough fish and crops to last them through the winter!
There is no sink on the lot and the street-side garbage can has been locked away
in an old well. All your newspapers, dishes, leftovers, etc., can now be
composted for your garden via the indoor trash can. If your compost bin is full
and you cannot put one more ounce of food into your trash can, you may delete it
and purchase another one.
Your Sim should get at gold badge in either fishing or gardening by the end of
the year.
If you have money to spend, you can buy wants like a telescope or a sculpture or
some such things, but you cannot "improve" the furniture that is already on the
lot. It must stay as-is. You may replace anything that a burglar has stolen, if
it's really needed/wanted, because you have no chance to stop the striped fiend!
But in the replacing, you must not improve the quality.
You may, of course, sell your excess fish, boots, and harvested plants right out
of your inventory if you like. Your Sim will most likely have earned quite a
nice sum by the time the challenge is done.
Feel free to accost any passerby and get to know them. Otherwise, it's a lonely
life in the bush for you and that weird, colored bunny tends to come popping
around....
Do not ever build a roof. You can add curtains (as I did in my story) to the
"tent" thing to make it look a bit more like a tent, but no walls or actual
houses are to be built.
Relationships: Base challenge rules state that you may make as many
relationships of any kind as you like, but you may not move anyone else in to
“help” on your lot. If a Sim autonomously helps you rake leaves, great. If you
have enough influence points to get someone to clean, etc., that’s fine too.
Variations to the base challenge:
Play the Sim through the Adult and Elder stages of life until they die. Then
start on the same lot with a new Sim, ghost of the old intact! (Credit to

Start your challenge in winter. You are allowed to eat out of the fridge if you
cannot catch and stock enough fish in your inventory before your pond freezes,
but you must make group meals and throw out the leftovers each time. (Credit to

Build It Up Variation: As your Sim earns
money, they can improve their living
situation, even building shelter in the form of a house with a roof! Build in
stages as the money comes in or save it up and build all at once. See how far
you can get with improvements in the time constraints of your chosen challenge
length, one Sim year or two Sim life stages. (Credit Lilymayrose)
While doing the challenge, don't forget to
take pictures so that you can share with others what you have done with the
challenge! Throw the pictures together, and upload them to The Sims 2
Story Exchange, and post or just tell your story in
the Land Lubbers Challenge Thread on the TS2.com BBS to share your results with others
participating in the challenge!
